How to Create a Productive Office Space

After spring cleaning your small business (check out last week’s blog!), capitalize on this opportunity to create a productive office space!  I’m sure your home office has gone through many iterations since the beginning of the pandemic, but there is always room for improvement.  Research indicates that our environment has a major impact on how we feel and how we perform.  So if you want to get the most out of your days working from home, check out these tips to create a productive office space!

Unleash your productivity with a second monitor

Having two monitors makes computer work a breeze!  You can keep your email, calendar, task management, and all other reference windows handy on one monitor, while you work on your tasks on the other monitor.  Or perhaps zoom meetings fill your days.  You can see your clients or teammates on one screen while you share your other screen with them.  No more nervously flipping through tabs and windows!  Having 2 monitors also makes writing easier, as you can have your research or reference files remain open on screen while you type on the other.  Purchasing a computer monitor is a very cost-effective way to improve the productivity of your office space!

Freshen up your space with some plants

Adding some nice green plants to your office space has been known to boost your mood and productivity, as well as improve the air quality.  Greenery in your workspace helps you breathe easy and focus on the task at hand.  When choosing plants, be sure to look for low maintenance ones so that they don’t become a chore! Some popular easy-going office plants include spider plants, ficus, and ferns.

Let your desk bask in natural light

We all love to soak up the sun, and natural light is incredibly beneficial for us.  Some of the best side effects include: increased focus and energy, reduced stress and anxiety, and better sleep.  Sounds like a magical fountain of productivity, doesn’t it? And the benefits don’t end there!  Inviting lots of natural light into your office space is also good for those new plants.  And if zoom is a common element of your routine, you will appreciate how easy it is to look radiant at your next meeting!  To make the most of the incoming sunlight, consider arranging your desk to face a window and perhaps add a mirror to reflect some of that light around the room.

Create an inspiring space

It’s critical that your office feels comfortable, inviting, and inspiring.  This space is where you face challenges, let your creativity bloom, and make daring decisions.  After all, running a small business is no small task!  Keep your workspace clutter-free and consider adding some fun inspirational elements.   You can keep cords tucked out of the way with some simple zip ties and clamps.  Consider adding a funky new desk organizer that keeps your desk orderly and makes you smile.  Top it all off with some quality pen and paper products so you are always ready for your next big idea.  Check out this cool sticky note cube over at our sister company Pen and Paper Co!

Channel that springtime energy and follow these tips to create a productive office space.   Future you will really appreciate it!
